Definition

A xylem fiber cell (PO:0000274) in which the inner-most layer of the secondary cell wall (GO:0009531) contains abundant cellulose and is poor in lignin. [source: ISBN:0080374903, PMID:21596948]

Comment

Often found in reaction wood in dicots and in some phloem fiber cells (PO:0004519), as in Linum usitatissimum. In gelatinous fiber cells, the inner layer of the cell wall is a cellulosic gelatinous-layer or G-layer, which may be relatively porous and less compact than the outer layers of the cell wall and may absorb water and swell.
